From Retro to Rough-and-Ready: Wrapping a Porsche 924 Safari-Style

We’re not in the business of transforming classics into rally cars – but every now and then, a project lands that’s just too fun to pass up. This one came with a rough concept, a very particular aesthetic, and the understanding that it didn’t need to be perfect – just perfectly grubby.

The car in question? A very tidy Porsche 924S, soon to be dressed up in full Safari Werks style. The brief was clear: make it look like it’s seen some action, even if it’s mostly going to shows and not the Serengeti!

We started where all good wrap jobs do – with a sketch on a vehicle outline. The initial design looked great on screen, but when we printed it full-size and laid it out, reality gave us a nudge. The oily handprints weren’t where we wanted them, some of the key lines didn’t quite fall right, and the spacing needed work.

So, back to the drawing board. We templated it properly, double-checked the panel measurements, and ran the full-size prints again – this time making sure the handprints landed right by the door handle. (Because if you’re going to do it, you may as well do it properly.)

The wrap was printed in-house using 3M IJ180 and matte laminated for that weathered, rally-worn finish. We even removed the rear bumper to get the cleanest wrap lines possible around the back end. The front half was installed between Christmas and New Year – a quiet morning in the unit when the telly had lost its charm and the leftover nut roast had run its course.

It’s a wrap that doesn’t take itself too seriously – rough around the edges by design, but no less precise in execution. And while it’s not our usual fare here at Mobad, it was a good reminder that every job, even the messy ones, needs a careful hand and a good eye.
